I agree pretty much in all that Abha Dawesar says in her TED talk. It was quite an interesting subject that she developed and it made me think of the considerable time that I spend using technology. Actually I am surprised that I am not such a big fan of 24 hour connectivity as a computer science person should be(?). In fact, it rather stresses me to keep track of all the messages and feeds from Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, mails, etc, etc. I see every day how my friends and family (including my mother lately) have these digital meetings in WhatsApp or Facebook and then they consider unnecessary to get together to talk because they have already exchanged news. Also, some people goes online and makes public all that is in their minds or everything they are doing, almost minute by minute. I do not like it."Time doesn't flow in the digital world in the same way that it does in the natural one ... Not just is the digital now far from the present, but it's in direct competition with it ...The digital world cannibalizes time". We have to be aware of the impact that technology has on us. Of course, it is a good thing and it brings us a lot of improvements to our lives. What would we do without technology nowadays? But like everything else, it must have a limited use, excesses are bad.
Hello Maria!
ResponderEliminarI've read your reflection andI think you make an interesting point. While I myself took a more direct approach to Dawesar's butchering of time you raise the point of the increased usage of information technology in todays society.
Good read!

Hi Maria,
ResponderEliminarI have listen to Dawesar's presentation too. I also agree in nearly everything she says.
Like you I find it quite hard and a little bit stressful to be a part of this "online-24-hour" type of lifestyle. I do not think that we can continue like this. However, technology is very important and I am truly grateful for how "it" helps us in many ways today. As you say, we do have to find limited and healthful way of using it.
Thank you!

Hi Maria!
ResponderEliminarI have now read your reflection, and I agree. To be online 24/7 is very stressful. To try to keep track of everything that is happening to everyone all the time, and still being able to have time to do real life activities. I find it both very usefull and abit sad. The way that I tend to meet people less face-to-face when I can just call them with facetime and think of this as good enough. I hope that we all stay in a one-foot in one-foot out scenario. Where we meet people online aswell in real life and understand the difference.

Thanks for your comments! I really appreciate them.
